Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen.
This is a beautiful representation of parental justice, but also brings home to all of us the importance of how we present ourselves online. So I wanted to address this today as it is important in proper Branding to get across that we understand the gravity of making bad posting decisions online.
I have seen people bad mouth their boss on a company facebook page or post pictures that I would not want a future employer, spouse, parent, college dean, co-worker, or customer to see. As if this cyber world is like writing in the diaries and journals we did as teenagers. Do not get me wrong I wrote awful, horrible things about my parents and being a writer and a poet I put the teenage hate and frustration with authority into rhyme, but my mom NEVER saw it nor did it make the rounds of my friends. Well the internet is not so kind to dissatisfied teenagers unhappy employees lonely spouses or YOU.
Like in garnering a reputation that sets you apart in business so do you need that same yardstick in everything you do online- do not believe me? Ask the teacher who posted party pictures of herself half naked in her college days shot gunning beer how she likes the unemployment line. Let’s face it this box this cyber connection not only gives us the illusion of typing away in our own homes in annonymity, but it also opens up everything we do, say, and the pictures we post to be found, even if you think otherwise. And right or wrong will create certain perceptions in other people’s mind on who we are.
But I am not talking about the crafty teen who password protected her post on facebook and only shared them with a few people, that her tech savvy dad could so easily crack. I am taking about the on a whim picture or comment that could cost you business and drive customers form you. And sink your company before you even get started.
On my Labrador email list I tell people only post emails you are happy to sign your name to, you do not care if your mom sees it, and you will stand behind.
So think before you post, comment, join, or share online- as forgetting, or making that simple little misstep could end up costing you and it is hard to unring a bell and impossible to ever completely remove your footprint on the web. What does yours say right now?
