WARNING don’t let your name be on the bathroom wall
Remember when you were in High School? And there were the girls whose names and numbers ended up on the boys bathroom wall. Those girls of easy virtue that everybody; knew who they were. Or the boys that were scratched in the girls stalls to identify the players who were just out for what they could get. Ironic though that those types never seemed to pair up, but I digress.
At times people who did not belong ended up there, by malice or misinformation as well.
What saved these kids erroneously placed, is not their denying their accusers, but in how they lived and their good reputations.
The Internet is the same way as High School. We have people who are out to ruin companies and your online presence for various reasons.
Could be your competition trying for an edge, to false beliefs, to downright Liable.
From passing on incorrect information that is unfavorable to you. And also by muckrakers, and trouble makers to unhappy customers, even if it was not a legitimate complaint or had you done anything to warrant the negative attention.
How to combat that you may ask? As I have said throughout this blog is build your reputation, by the way you handle yourself not just here not just in business but in all your life. Live the ethics and values you hold dear and treat others as you would have in return deliver quality be dependable and let others speak your praises, as they will. And the positive noise will damper down any “bad press” you may receive here in comment boxes on forums and social media.
You cannot combat it, if there is more negative than positive, so keep your online presence current. Talk about what you do and ask your customers, teammates and partners to comment on your blogs and social pages and if they see misinformation to correct it by speaking up.
I actually ended up on an “is she or is she not” Scam list myself. I thought that a bit odd with the mass amount of positive information that leads back to the 90’s with my Labrador kennel and personal life as well as every business I have ever lent my name to with never a cross word said about me- that in one of my philanthropic endeavors I should bring out a nut who is known for chasing and correcting people in how they choose to spend their time and conduct their life, but my stellar reputation and what people say about me and the way I not only do business but live my life proceeds me. So I am not concerned. And neither should you be as long and you build your reputation and brand yourself and show would be customers partners and teammates that linking to you will be of benefit to both of you.
You could defend yourself against the false accusers, but more than likely you would just feed an over active ego who felt it their duty to right a perceived wrong or warn the public of your possible desire to take advantage of them, but not get a retraction.
If the slight is bad enough you do have the Libel laws on your side, but for online content that is harder than it should be unless you have a lot of $$$$ to pay to lawyers. Or a big corporate footprint.
In my case I joined the forum where lies were told and put my information and picture on their about me page. I did not participate in the discussion, nor defend myself. I saw no reason to people know who I am, and they know what I stand for. But by my joining and not hiding who I am, scammers’ use fake info and fake names. There is nothing fake about me ANYWHERE on the net. I have taken away any power as to the mentioning of me. You can do this too should the need arise.

- Be real, mean what you say and say what you mean.
- Deliver value
- Be honest in business and in life, this trait will follow you
- Have Character, be a person you admire and your mom is proud of
- This is out of order, and may not apply to you, but it does to me- make God proud.
- speak well of others and be generous
- Be fair in business and life
- sign your name even if only figuratively, to what you do
- Be kind it cost you nothing
- look in the mirror every day not in vanity, but to make sure you can meet your own eyes, as if you can others can as well, because who we are is reflected there.
Reputation is everything build yours
Those are just 10 ways to build the you, you are inside. Be the person outside you are inside and who you are will shine, and what you provide and the way you do business will grow you not only a loyal following but, that trust and good reputation will overshadow anything that does not fit who others know you are and not affect the bigger picture of your life or influence those that research you and your business.
As there will always be people who may wish to mar that reputation, but a small amount of negative can never out weigh a mountain of positive start building your mountain.
