Top 5 Network Marketing Companies, is yours gonna be one of them? Amway

After being asked where ViSalus ranked in the top Network Marketing Companies I went out and found who the top 5 were, and why they are.

And I am going to blog about them over the next few week’s So the top 5 network marketing companies

I started with Avon being # 1

But #2 is Amway which I just saw an Amway commercial on TV the other day,  Amway on TV imagine that!

My dad tried this company in the 70’s and was told it was a cult by so many people, when he got involved. Amway encouraged stockpiling products and listening to car tapes every time you drove anywhere. And required a mass amount of just Amway members together, no one else allowed time until my mom said ENOUGH! And she made him quit, but they kept calling kept stopping by trying to get him back in the fold. They did not know my mom and how tough she was, and she stood her ground and he was out! So I was surprised to find

# 2. is Amway, Amway people are loyal, and my dad was as well, but it was disastrous for him. However the feedback I got when I was conducting my surveys was if you love it, you love it! And if you don’t…. we11. And I discovered many people have been quite successful. I believe old school companies that started with catalogs and door to door face to face have benefited greatly with the use of the internet. Amway is no exception.

Amway

Sales:  $8.4 billion

Markets: personal beauty products personal care and home care products

Distributors:  3 million +

Marketing Style: Direct MLM, internet

Comp plan:  Multi-level

Founded In 1959 as The American Way Association, in West Michigan by Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel. The first product was a concentrated organic cleaner called Frisk. The direct selling company now operates in more than 80 countries and territories around the world, and enables more than 3 million people to own independent businesses. In 2000, Amway became a subsidiary of Alticor with sister companies Quixtar, Inc. and Access Business Group LLC in 2007.

Though Amway has had it’s share of controversy:

From Wikipedia Amway has several times been accused of being a pyramid scheme. A 1979 FTC investigation in the United a 1997 Belgian court and a 2008 court judgment in the United Kingdom all dismissed these claims

In a 1979 ruling, the Federal Trade Commission found that Amway does not qualify as a pyramid scheme because distributors were not paid to recruit people and had to sell products to get bonus checks, and the company was committed to buying back its distributors’ excess inventory.

The FTC did, however, find Amway “guilty of price-fixing and making exaggerated income claims”. The company was ordered to stop retail price fixing and allocating customers among distributors and was prohibited from misrepresenting the amount of profit, earnings or sales its distributors are likely to achieve with the business. Amway was ordered to accompany any such statements with the actual averages per distributor, pointing out that more than half of the distributors do not make any money, with the average distributor making less than $100 per month. The order was violated with a 1986 ad campaign, resulting in a $100,000 fine> end Wikipedia article.

Scheme? Cult? Road to riches?????

As I said many people have questioned Amway and the practices some have had every good experience and others like my dad not so much. However it continues to thrive and grow and be the right business choice for those that are informed in and accept Amway’s business style,  like the company, and are able to make it work.
